As we look back on 2023 , it’s clear to say that 2023 was an exceptional year for the life sciences market in Ireland marked by significant investments and industry developments. Notably, Dublin seemed to be a hot spot this year, with a significant number of investments being made in Dublin and its surrounding counties.
There was also a lot of activity in the Munster region:
- Eli Lilly announced that they would be investing around €1 billion in a new state of the art API Biologics facility in Raheen, Limerick.
- Astellas, a Japanese company were granted permission to build a new €330 million facility in Tralee, Kerry.
Towards the end of 2023, it was also revealed that Bristol Myer Squibb intend to apply for planning permission to build an advanced biologics manufacturing center in its existing site in Cruiserath, Dublin. Additionally, Novo Nordisk, the Danish manufacturer of obesity drugs Ozempic and Wegovy, shared their plans to establish a manufacturing presence in Ireland. Prior to Christmas, they submitted an application to build an extensive manufacturing facility in Clondalkin, Dublin which would create 1,000 jobs.
Renowned for its value proposition, Ireland continues to attract pharmaceutical and MedTech companies wishing to establish a base here or expand their operations. Boasting the EU’s highest rate of STEM graduates among young adults, Ireland is a hub of well-educated talent. Moreover, Ireland has already established itself as a prime hub for life sciences firms, hosting ten of the leading 15 biopharma companies and nine out of the top 10 medical device companies.
What will 2024 look like?
Based on 2023, the life sciences market shows no signs of slowing down any time soon and this is likely to continue in 2024 as projects evolve and take shape. Dublin and its surrounding area are witnessing significant investment so it will be interesting to see if this trend continues.
