To make things easier and to ensure you too are well informed we’ve selected and summarised this month’s top Irish Life Science industry news stories below.

Edwards Lifesciences announce their first day of business in the Shannon Free Zone
Edwards Lifesciences, a global leader in patient-focused innovations for structural heart disease and critical care monitoring, announced its first day of business at its initial site located in the Shannon Free Zone on August 8th.  In March this year Edwards Lifesciences announced plans to build its first plant in the European Union in Ireland. The company has now hired almost 60 people to work at the Shannon site across various positions. This is just the beginning as Edwards plan to invest approx. €80m in the Mid-west in the coming years which should create up to 600 new jobs. Full article>>

BD opens new state-of-the-art R&D facility in Limerick creating 85 new jobs
BD, a leading global medical technology company employing over 1300 people across Ireland, has opened a new R&D Centre of Excellence in Limerick’s National Technology Park. The €21 million investment has already seen 100 jobs recruited for the facility in 2017 and early 2018. Adding to that 85 new high-tech jobs for the project have been announced for a variety of positions, including Hardware and software engineering, Scientists and technical management. Abbott create 500 new jobs at Donegal healthcare plant
Global Healthcare company Abbott, has announced plans to expand its existing manufacturing facility in Donegal. This expansion will create up to 500 new position at the site. This is in addition to 3,000 workers employed across Abbott’s Irish operations which focus on healthcare solutions from manufacturing nutritional products to creating diagnostic tools for physicians. The company’s Donegal facility is the sole manufacturing plant and distributor for Abbott’s test strips, used in its FreeStyle blood glucose monitoring meters, helping patients with diabetes manage their condition. West Pharma celebrate the official opening of a New Global Manufacturing Facility in Waterford and the launch of new product line Westar®
West Pharma had a double celebration on July 19th as it officially opened its global centre of excellence in Waterford for West’s advanced manufacturing network, and announced the launch of a new product line—Westar® Select. The new 20,500 square meter facility which lies on a 44-acre campus, will produce West’s proprietary elastomeric laminate sheeting, used to package insulin for use in pen injectors. The site will also offer high-value finishing for components, including stoppers and plungers, produced at other West facilities around the world. Full article>>

Jazz Pharmaceuticals to increase Irish staff numbers by 10%
Jazz Pharma are set to increase their headcount in Ireland by 10% across its headquarters in Dublin and manufacturing plant in Athlone. The news comes as Jazz prepares to file for regulatory approval in Europe by the end of 2018 for a drug to treat excessive sleeping in patients with narcolepsy and for those with obstructive sleep apnoea.
