High levels of Life Science project expertise available in Ireland

Plan, plan and plan some more was a recurrent theme at the project execution event run by Enterprise Ireland and the ISPE Belgium affiliate in Antwerp. As is often the case, the commonality of issues and problems across different projects and companies proved yet again the benefit of events like this to share problems, case histories and solutions. A consistent theme of the speakers was the need not only to front load the planning and project design, but to utilise stage gates to achieve greater certainty on the project cost and schedule.

The event was also part of a trade mission with Minister Pat Breen. The event showcased the Life Science project expertise available in Ireland, with excellent presentations from Linesight, Eli Lilly and others. LSC have been working with European clients for most of its 15 year history, but the depth of expertise and innovation in project delivery now being delivered from Ireland is notable.

The high levels of investment in new pharmaceutical facilities in Ireland over the last 25 years has fostered a cluster of small to medium sized companies supporting both capital investment and ongoing operations. These companies have developed high levels of expertise in their respective niches and now most major pharmaceutical projects across Europe have a major Irish engineering or construction presence. This is equally prevalent in the application and development of new technologies, software and systems for the pharma, med device and biotech sectors. European companies speak highly with regards to Irish engineering and project management expertise.

The focus on project delivery is a trend that seems likely to continue and offers the Irish Life Science industry a distinct opportunity.
